It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single movie in possession of a box office record, must be in want of an unnecessary sequel. Merry Men 2 continues with the titular Merry Men; Ayo (Ramsey Nouah), Naz (Jjim Iyke), Amajun (AY), and Remi (Falz). They’re forced to help an accused criminal to escape justice in so their kidnapped loved one can be released by the criminal.
Written by Anthony Kehinde Joseph and directed by Moses Inwang, the film was released in December 2019. It grossed over 233 million Naira and was recently released on Netflix. It is currently the number 1 film on Netflix Nigeria so we had to see what the fuzz was about. Here is our take on merry Men 2: Another Mission.
Nice setup.

Leather jackets plus power bikes plus darkness? We’re obviously in for an action flick.
Why is this movie an hour and 54 minutes long?

Perhaps it is because of unnecessary scenes such as this one.
Look, it’s Nollywood’s most popular actor.

Our most popular guest star, the Lekki Ikoyi link bridge, makes a cameo once again. We hope someone recognizes this bridge’s talent and nominates it for an AMVCA soon.
Oh look, it’s this cliche line.

Is this really a Nollywood Film if they don’t tell you that this is in fact, not a Nollywood film?
Is this what counts as humor these days?

The humor in this film has been a let down so far.
Two girls kissing onscreen?

Wake us up when two guys can also kiss in a bar like that and get away with it. Until then, can we stop sexualizing girls on screen for entertainment?
How many subplots does this film have?

So Naz and his wife are having a baby, Zara just got released from a prison van, some stranger just went into labor by the pool, and now Dame Maduka is seeking justice?
The AY drinking game.

If you’re looking for a drinking game, take a shot each time AY’s character says Zaddy.
An underwater fight sequence? Nice

The action sequences in this film have been quite impressive so far.
Oh look, it’s this funny guy again.

Uchemba Williams is pretty much reprising his role from Sugar Rush. He might want to stop taking these roles before Nollywood stereotypes him.
Old habits die hard.

How does an officer of the law marry a high profile criminal and act surprised when he tries to do criminal stuff?
Have we already complimented the action scenes?

Well, pardon us, this movie doesn’t have a lot going for it.
We appreciate the action because this is what we’re getting for humor.

Perhaps this film should have stuck to being just an action film because the humor is falling short while the action sequences are impressive.
Merry Men 2 is a nice popcorn flick with impressive action sequences. It has an “okay” plot with many loose ends and not enough humor. We’d rate it 2.5/5
