VS50 – Visual Storyteller Daniel Obasi

Creative activist, art director. photographer and stylist, Daniel Obasi’s style is unorthodox and sophisticated. The 23-year-old visual storyteller pushes the boundaries of afro-avant-garde designs and sexual identity through his work which includes short films such as ‘The Illegal Project’, ‘Embers of Bloom’, ‘An Alien in Town’ and ‘Udara’.

He uses short films as a form of expression, exploring various topics that interest him and using the films as a platform to express his emotions and opinions. He is also strongly influenced by futurism, fantasy and androgyny which comes through in his body of work. Lagos Futurism is a photography series produced in collaboration with William Ukoh (styled by Daniel Obasi) which showcases a fashion-forward take on afro-futurism.

He has expanded his story-telling and design skills to the music industry in the past few years and was responsible for styling in Major Lazer’s ‘All My Life’. He also designed the album cover for Odunsi (The Engine)’s debut album, rare’

The creative industry is a sector that encompasses expressions in art and film to fashion and architecture. It is one of the most rapidly growing sectors globally and social media has allowed creators widen the reach of their message. VS50 merits the achievements of futurists that have inspired us through street culture, film and art and pushed our imagination through design and creative content.
