High fashion but from an African point of view. 24-year-old Photographer and Stylist Stephen Tayo celebrates the beauty in the everyday. He helps the viewer of his art see the most mundane events in a different way – seeing the high fashion in a group of Nigerian women headed to church in matching geles or in boys chilling on a beach wearing oversize sunglasses or young siblings all dressed up in matching outfits and ready to party. Tayo believes that Nigerians are naturally fashionable people and he lets this come through in his work. Whether it’s shots of the Chale Wote festival in Ghana or teaming up with Grace Ladoja and Meji Alabi to co-create Skepta and Wizkid’s music video ‘Energy’, capturing youth culture and local fashion is where his heart is at. Stephen Tayo’s work has been gaining quite some attention internationally including features in Vogue, It’s Nice That, INDIE magazine and Coeval Magazine. He has also worked with various fashion brands including Poppy Lissiman, Patta and ALARA Lagos. With collaborations with streetwear designers like Orange Culture, Motherland, Vivendi, Shekudo and SevereNature and plans to publish a photobook soon, Tayo continues to look forward to taking on new creative challenges in the near future.
