VS50 – Dotun Popo

Dotun Popo is a professional Nigerian Sculptor and artist who makes art out of scrap metals. The talented artist began his professional training at the Obafemi Awolowo University (popularly called OAU), where he graduated as the best overall student in his department. At the university, he studied sculpture, before going on to attain a Masters’ in the art of painting. He also trained as a welder and he was inspired to hybridise all his learning experiences in his art.

He is primarily a sculptor but infuses painting to illustrate the beauty in junk or rejected items. Dotun hopes to inspire other artists to reimagine and reinvent how they view the artistic media. He also wants to re-educate mainstream Nigerians on how they view things regarded as worthless.

As many Nigerian artists do, Popoola has gained a number of successes both nationally and internationally, with his work featured on many platforms. The artist also has had his work featured on many international magazines and has had some of his work included in many international tours. He is chiefly inspired by the things around him and the love for making something worth appreciating out of nothing.

The creative industry is a sector that encompasses expressions in art and film to fashion and architecture. It is one of the most rapidly growing sectors globally and social media has allowed creators widen the reach of their message. VS50 merits the achievements of futurists that have inspired us through street culture, film and art and pushed our imagination through design and creative content.
