VS50 – Creative Activist Fati Abubakar

“We have to tell the world what is happening in Borno.”

Fati Abubakar is a photojournalist who sheds light on social issues like health, conflict and cultural diversity through her photography. Her project ‘Bits of Borno’ is a story of survival in Borno even after the ravages of insurgency and Boko Haram terrorism.

The project is an expository documentation and has been featured by various media houses including the New York Times, VOA and CNN. Abubakar shows a different view of Borno from the usual images of war and hunger with which outsiders are usually inundated.

Life goes on in Borno, everyday activities and pleasures still happen and the people of Borno remain strong and resilient despite the horrors of dealing with Boko Haram.

From little girls in a casual fashion shoot to the joys of ceremonies and parties, Abubakar shows that many aspects of life in Borno are still common place and people still smile, laugh and celebrate life.

Fati Abubakar has been commissioned for projects by organisations like UNICEF and International Alert and has plans to collate her visual stories in a book.

The creative industry is a sector that encompasses expressions in art and film to fashion and architecture. It is one of the most rapidly growing sectors globally and social media has allowed creators widen the reach of their message. VS50 merits the achievements of futurists that have inspired us through street culture, film and art and pushed our imagination through design and creative content.
