VS50 – Ruth Ossai

The renowned photographer grew up in the south-eastern Nigeria and is now based in the UK. Ossai’s work is based on the narratives it portrays about her subjects as she uses her photography to tell their stories and celebrate their personal identities.

Ossai recently collaborated with filmmaker Akinola Davis Jr on a special project for Kenzo and also worked with designer, Mowalola Ogunlesi, to create a photo series inspired by throwback Nigerian highlife music and retro culture.

Her photography covers Nigerian lifestyles and Igbo identity as she has always found her inspiration within the fabric of Nigerian communities. Her friends and family often feature in her work as models and she uses striking backdrops and floor mats in her studio photos to mimic effects from Nollywood films. Her Women’s Tales series celebrates women in Nigerian cinema

The creative industry is a sector that encompasses expressions in art and film to fashion and architecture. It is one of the most rapidly growing sectors globally and social media has allowed creators widen the reach of their message. VS50 merits the achievements of futurists that have inspired us through street culture, film and art and pushed our imagination through design and creative content.
